Current Position
Associate Professor of organizational behaviour in the School of Hospitality and Tourism Management and the Department of Business at the University of Guelph where he also teaches in the MA Leadership Program and the Ph.D. program in Management. Dr. Gruman has previously taught in both the Psychology Department and the Odette School of Business at the University of Windsor, and the Psychology Department and the Department of Management at the Scarborough campus of the University of Toronto. Additionally, he has instructed in the Business Studies Area at St. Clair College of Applied Arts and Technology, and in the Ontario Management Development Program.
Research Interests
Dr. Gruman’s current research interests focus on well-being in the workplace. Among his current research and writing projects are those related to the emerging field of positive organizational behaviour which explores the effect of hope, optimism, confidence, and resilience among employees. Much of Dr. Gruman’s work focuses on how the organizational on-boarding process can be designed to promote the well-being of newcomers. He has also conducted research, and written about, employee engagement, diversity in organizations, management education, disaster preparedness, and people’s ability to tolerate ambiguity.
Notables
Dr. Gruman completed his doctoral internship at Jackson Leadership Systems, a consulting firm specializing in leadership assessment and development. He has been profiled and quoted in such publications as MoneySense Magazine, HR Professional, The Globe and Mail, National Post, Toronto Star, Ottawa Citizen, Montreal Gazette, Calgary Herald, and has appeared on CTV’s Canada AM, Global News, Report on Business Television and CBC radio. In addition to speaking at numerous conferences, Dr. Gruman has consulted and delivered seminars for Fortune 500 corporations and not-for-profit agencies including General Motors, Ford Motor Company, Deloitte & Touche, Hiram Walker & Sons, Accenture, Oliver Bonacini Restaurants, The Children’s Wish Foundation, and The Lung Association.
Courses Taught
He has taught a variety of undergraduate, MBA, MA, and Ph.D. courses in such areas as organizational behaviour, principles of management, fundamentals of leadership, managerial skills, statistics, industrial psychology, and change management. He has been nominated for numerous teaching awards including two nominations as Ontario’s best lecturer, and in 2009 was the recipient of a University of Guelph Faculty Association Distinguished Professor Award.
